Obsessing Over Going Viral Is Preventing Your Law Firm From Signing More Clients
Going viral looks very sexy from the outside! The social media followers from that one viral video can increase exponentially, the shares will skyrocket, and the likes explode in the thousands. As a spectator it’s natural to think to yourself “what a great marketing opportunity it would be for my legal practice if I could simply go viral.” Think again.
Before you let you are imagination get the best of you I’d like you to ponder one questions, have you ever followed a single social media account (or signed on to become a client) because you noticed that it went viral? Marketing your legal practice on social media is about building a community of your ideal clients who are begging to do business with you! The goal is to sign more clients, am I right?
Would you rather have a million social media followers who have no interest or desire in doing business with you, or have 5,000 loyal followers who look to you as an industry leader and feel a sense of community from your social media content to the extent that they are begging to do business with you; and more importantly, know, like and trust you enough to refer you to their families, friends, colleagues, or anyone whom they come in contact with that has a need for your legal services? I would choose the latter!
Sure, going viral gets many eyeballs to that specific post and to your social media account. But, when your community of followers is filled with uninterested individuals who happened to like one single post (and moved-on to the next shiny object) or happened to follow your account because of your viral video but have no desire to further engage with your social media content, then you end up in a situation where you are unlikely to close any clients based upon your current followers. More importantly, the algorithm from that social media platform will not promote any subsequent posts because your community of followers are not engaging in a meaningful way with your content by sharing your content, commenting, or liking your other posts. Therefore, the likelihood that you will attract your ideal client with any subsequent post is slim to none.
Rather than focus on going viral, your law practice should focus on attracting your ideal clients by creating content that provides value to your followers and any viewer that sees your post. When you shift your focus from obsessing over vanity metrics like follower count, and harness your energy on attracting your ideal client by building a community of individuals that know you, like you, and trust you – you will close more clients.
